Overlooking a scenic river valley, with a view that encompasses picturesque farms and sweeping mountains, real estate in the small community of Shawnee includes many vintage buildings, and large cozy mountain lodges.
Apart from the general store, art studio, and post office, Shawnee is mostly a residential community, with many of the homes for sale climbing the hillsides south of Frontage Road.
Along with the great views, properties in Shawnee also tend to occupy generous lots, with ample parking and, in many cases, detached storage buildings, like car garages.
Log-siding and riverstone are two common finishing materials, allowing these homes to blend in with their rugged surroundings. Open interiors are well-lit thanks to the large windows, especially the floor-to-ceiling ones that tend to grace the central great-rooms. These spaces also include cozy wood stoves, or stone fireplaces, leading up to log-lined cathedral ceilings.
Raw wood and farm-style details complete the picture, along with useful loft spaces for sleeping, storage, or study.
You can take advantage of the location of your Shawnee property with the raised patios, sometimes covering walk-out basements for extra storage or sleeping areas. The mountain views from your kitchen bar will amaze you every morning that you wake up in your Shawnee mountain home.
Comfort and convenience are also paramount, due to the many recent fittings which include solid heating units, designer lighting, and modern appliances.
The picturesque and historic community of Shawnee is located along Highway 285 in Platte Canyon. Carved by the North Fork South Platte River, this beautiful, winding valley connects Denver to the South Park basin.
Shawnee itself is just a 1 hour drive from downtown Denver, lying between the other small valley towns of Bailey and Grant. The Pike National Forest surrounds Shawnee, along with the mountains that rise up from a wide valley meadow dotted with ranches and lakes.
The natural splendor of the area around Shawnee accounts for a great deal of the town's attractiveness. Indeed, Shawnee was developed as an early resort town, attracting visitors from far and wide to its fishing, hiking, camping, and sightseeing opportunities.
Visitors to the area also enjoy horseback riding at one of the many farms and ranches along the valley.
Numerous awe-inspiring peaks punctuate the landscape. A great way to experience these is by taking a drive through Guanella Pass, just past Grant to the north, and connecting to the I-70 at Georgetown beyond.
Another highlight of Shawnee is its storied history. In 1886, James W. Price settled the area, building a hotel only three years later. Over the years, more development was funded by the Colorado & Southern Railway, as well as the many miners who passed through in search of their fortune. The town has since been designated as a Park County Historic District, partly thanks to its many turn-of-the-century structures and post office.
Students in Shawnee are designated to the Platte Canyon RE-1 district. Nearby schools are Deer Creek Elementary, Fitzsimmons Middle, and Platte Canyon High School.
