Lake George Town & Area Information

Lake George is a small mountain valley town located in Pike National Forest, near the intersection of Elevenmile Canyon and Tarryall Valley. The area also includes a lake and reservoir that share the town's name, as well as a number gulches and creeks winding away in various directions.

Just 36 miles and 45 minutes from Colorado Springs, the town of Lake George is also near to a a number of other mountain communities. Thanks to Highway 24 which runs through the town, residents are connected to Florissant, Divide, and Woodland Park to the east; and HartselFairplay, and Buena Vista in the west.

Hartsel and Fairplay are located in the beautiful South Park valley, also home to Spinney Mountain and Eleven Mile State Parks - both easily accessible from Lake George.

Lake George was established in 1891 as a stop on the Colorado Midland Railway. The lake next to the town was created for harvesting ice, and in the early 20th century, potato farming became popular around Lake George.

Area Attractions

The area around Lake George is best known for its world-class trout fishing, but residents and visitors also enjoy the amazing hiking and camping opportunities as well. Sightseers can take in the fossils and petrified wood displayed at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in Florissant, or travel a short distance west to see Elevenmile Canyon and Eleven Mile State Park. The reservoirs in this area are likewise excellent for fishing, hiking, and camping.
