Guffey Town History

It is said that non-native settlers first came to Guffey sometime in the 1870s. Things quickly got going as various mining operations sprang up in the area. Things have quietened down since then.

In 1907, two cowboys found a large meteorite near Guffey - the largest ever found in Colorado! Slices of this meteorite now reside in museums across the country.

Located at the southern end of Colorado's South Park basin, barely a mile off Highway 9, the small town of Guffey sits between serene hills of pine and meadow grass.

Just over 30 miles to the south, residents of Guffey can make it to Cañon City, and Colorado Springs is just over an hour's drive east. Other nearby towns are Hartsel and Fairplay to the north, and Florissant to the northeast.

Clustered around two short, parallel roads, Guffey consists of a few local government and service buildings, some houses, two restaurants, and a bar. Many of the buildings are well-preserved wooden structures from the town's mining days.

Guffey has gained some attention for its tradition of electing animals to the position of mayor. Word is that the current mayor is a cat named Monster, who resides at The Guffey Garage, a local attraction offering custom wood and metal work.
