About South Park

South Park is a grassland flat located within the basin formed by the Rocky Mountains' Mosquito and Park Mountain Ranges in central Colorado. This expansive high valley covers approximately 1,000 square miles (2,590 km2) and ranges in elevation from approximately 9,000 to 10,000 ft (3,000 m) above sea level. It serves as the headwaters of the South Platte River and is situated about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Denver.

Geologically, South Park is a wide faulted syncline of sedimentary rocks, nestled between the predominantly Precambrian igneous rocks of the Front Range to the east and the Sawatch Uplift to the west. The Mosquito Range acts as a barrier along the western side of the valley, and the Thirty-Nine Mile volcanic field is located to the southeast.

The South Park area has a rich history related to mining. Gold mining began in the region in 1859, with extensive placer deposits on the west side of the park and lode deposits in the Mosquito Range. The remnants of dredging for gold can be seen in the extensive gravel ridges east of Fairplay.

South Park is traversed by several highways, including U.S. Highway 285, providing access to the valley from the eastern side over the Front Range.

It's worth noting that South Park is also the name of a popular American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The series revolves around four boys and their adventures in and around the fictional Colorado town of South Park.
